The eastern US reported elevated noise from a cold front as it swept toward the Atlantic coast. New England experienced a number of coastal lightning-rich storms this morning. Northern Europe into the Mediterranean region also remain active but I’ve heard no comments from European stations as to any impact. It may simply be that they are QRT until the system passes or there may be no real problem. The western Pacific is largely unchanged as storms continue in parts of Japan, South into Oceania. Australian populations centers in the East appear continue to experience afternoon and evening storms with a wall of noise at sea to the North although VK4YB reports that QRN is improved a bit allowing him to hear Hawaii at the very least.
Geomagnetic conditions are currently at quiet to elevated-quiet levels. A coronal hole that is currently geoeffective is expected to bring elevated solar wind and unsettled conditions but for now the storm threat appears to be minimal. The Bz is at or near unity this morning and solar wind velocities are averaging near 360 km/s. DST values actually look very good this morning and may cause one to question whether a major change is preparing to happen as proton concentrations are elevated to moderate levels.
Propagation was pretty good during the evening and the band was open but interested parties had to be patient and look for peaks. If you were only QRV in the early evening, you probably missed out. QSB was fast on fades with slow but steady recoveries and on peaks, signals were quite strong. Activity was more fragmented and may reinforce the fact that operators may have to synchronize their schedules better to maximize their potential. Tools like the ON4KST chat can help facilitate this activity. The operator that has time to listen for extended periods on a variety of modes will likely be rewarded.

The following stations provided reports of their two-way QSO’s as well as any additional activity that might have occurred during this session (this is not necessarily a complete list – only what was reported!):
Eric, NO3M, reported an afternoon, full-sun CW QSO with K8TV. He also completed a CW QSO with KB5NJD and later in the evening with W4IQ. Eric indicated that this operator was an ex-Coast Guard radioman. Eric also completed a JT9 QSO with W7IUV. Here is a recording I made of Eric calling CQ at 0235z:
John, WA3ETD, completed a JT9 QSO with K9SLQ. John indicated high noise in his local area while others indicated the presence of strong QSB on his and other signals.
Ken, K5DNL, reported a JT9 QSO with ZF1EJ. Using WSPR overnight, Ken reported fourteen stations and he received reports from 82 unique stations including nine located in Canada.
Joe, NU6O, reported JT9 QSO’s with the following: “W0YSE -06/-16, K0KE -23/-26, NC0B -19/-21, N1VF +02/-19, VE7SL +02/-11” Using WSPR overnight, Joe reported six stations and he received reports from 35 unique stations. Joe added, “Good prop to the E with both modes.” but indicated that he had no trans-Pacific reports. Joe’s JT9 reports from PSKReporter looks quite similar to his WSPR reports in terms of distribution.
Roger, VE7VV, reported an evening CW QSO with CF7MM who was using a homebrew bug on 473 kHz.
Ben, N1VF, completed JT9 QSO’s with W0YSE and NC0B.
Steve, VE7SL, completed JT9 QSO’s with K9FD and W0YSE.
Larry, W7IUV, completed JT9 QSO’s with NO3M, W0YSE and WB0DBQ and also reported W)YSE’s CW during the evening.
Hideo, JH3XCU, reported that JA3TVF and JA0HXV were QRV on 473 kHz CW at 1045z.
Neil, W0YSE, reported that he completed an evening JT9 QSO with W7IUV. Neil added that he “Sent him -09, and rcvd a -11.” Later in the evening, Neil reported a first-time QSO with N1VF using JT9. Neil reported Ben at -22 dB S/N and received -24 dB S/N. Neil indicates that he was using about 1.5-watts EIRP. Neilindicated that he “…was heard on CW by Robert, KR7O near Fresno, CA at 614 miles, as well as being decoded on the Reverse Beacon Network up in BC and AB.” W7IUV, also reported hearing Neil on CW. In a subsequent addendum submitted this morning, Neil reported “I had a JT9 QSO with Rod, NC0B in Ault, CO at 975 miles. (S,R) -15, -19. (This was our first Q on any mode) and with Joe, NU6O in Eureka, CA at 351 miles. -06, -16 also with Steve, VE7SL on Mayne Island, BC at 223 miles. -08, -03.” Using WSPR overnight, Neil reported that he was “…heard by a whopping 51, which is the most so far this season by at least 9 stations. Several new call signs that I don’t recall seeing before were in my list of listeners. And, Eden, ZF1EJ decoded my 1.5w EIRP twice at -28 and -30 dB.”
The band was quiet at KB5NJD in the early evening. I heard K9SLQ calling CQ on 474.5 kHz CW just after local sunset which is very early. I called Wayne but he did not respond so the band was not quite ready at that point. He did not CQ for very long so I was not able to determine when the band would sufficiently support my signal so early. Just after dark here in North Texas (0045z) WA3ETD was calling CQ on JT9. He was reported at my station twice but John never heard my replies. This peak was brief and not replicated on a later QSO attempt. I completed a CW QSO with Eric, NO3M, who was strong but briefly faded only to return strong on a quick call to say hello. The path was strong but subject to variations, as always, but communications were minimally impacted. We signed after about 8 minutes at 0228z and I checked JT9 again and made a WSPR call. WSPR reports were very good in many respects but evening activity was spotty and came in chunks. Band noise was up by late evening so I spent time listening West, which was very quiet. W0YSE was CQing on CW and its possible that I heard a few pings from him which is encouraging and makes me wonder if we could have completed a “very slow” visual CW QSO (NOT QRSS!). Neil and I worked on this last year following some work done by W5EST. Perhaps its time to revisit this. Reverse beacon network was stingy again but I did receive a late report from W3OA. This morning the situation was more optimistic with a CW QSO with W0RW on 473 kHz at1033z. Paul and I exchanged RST 559 / 579 reports and moved on. Paul was listening simplex and on 3555 for cross band calls. On the approach to sunrise, more RBN reports were observed from VE6 for my signal at respectable levels. I tried to raise VE7CNF who was soliciting CW QSO’s on the ON4KST chat but Toby had likely gone back to bed. It was a pretty decent session. Hopefully we see some kind of enhancement from the coronal hole and solar wind velocity increase.
Al, K2BLA, reported “…very low noise this AM saw a couple of CQ’s on JT9 but stns I have wkd many times. Called my own CQ…nil. WSPR Hrd by 63 hrd 13…” Al received a call from NC0B that was observed by K5DNL but Al indicated that he did not hear Rob or may have been shutting down at the time.

Roger, VK4YB, indicated that “QRN is much reduced and able to decode K9FD. Propagation also down. Signals going no further than the Alberta twins on both WSPR and JT9.” Roger received reports from JA1PKG, K9VBS, KJ6MKI, KL7L, KPH, KR7O VA7JX, VE6JY and VE6XH. He shared two-way reports with K9FD.
Robert, KR7O, reported that “Copied W0YSE CQing on CW with no takers. Weak CW from KB5NJD. Good JT9 activity last night, but signals seemed down about 6dB on the regulars. Longest JT9 decodes NO3M and K9FD. Fourteen copied on WSPR including K2BLA (-18), W3LPL (-29) and W4BCX (-27).”

Eden, ZF1EJ, was active on JT9 during the evening and this morning, completing a QSO with K5DNL. Using WSPR, Eden reported nine stations. He received reports from 49 unique stations and he shared two-way reports with K9FD.
Laurence, KL7L, indicated that “NU6O on screen CQ JT9 overnight. Was rx only till 1730z now few CQ JT9 pre dawn – blowing snow overnight and now” Using WSPR, Laurence reported seven stations including VK4YB and K9FD. DX report details can be viewed here.
Merv, K9FD (/KH6), reported another audio cable problem late in the previous session which seems to have been repaired for this session. Using WSPR, Merv reported eleven stations including 7L1RLL. He shared two-way reports with VK4YB and ZF1EJ. Merv received reports from 45 unique stations including 7L1RLL2, 7L1RLL4, JA1PKG, JA3TVF, JH3XCU, KL7L, VK2XGJ, and VK3ALZ.
