Storms persist from the Desert Southwest through the Midwest into the mid-Atlantic region.  The Gulf coast and Great Lakes regions were also impacted.  Noise continues to be a big problem in Europe as well and trans-Atlantic reports have been difficult if not impossible to accomplish.

12-hour North American lightning summary


Geomagnetic conditions reached storm levels again as Solarham reports that isolated storm activity and elevated solar wind velocities are possible for the next 24 hours.  The Bz has been variable but is currently pointing to the North and proton values were elevated to moderate levels through early parts of the daytime session.  Solar wind velocities peaked above 700 km/s but are averaging near 590 km/s with a few excursions above 600 km/s.  DST values are generally skirting the centerline at negative levels.  As Trans-Pacific openings were quite good overnight, we can probably file these storm levels away as an enhancement, doing less harm than what we have observed recently.




Roelof, PA0RDT, has been listening for Joe, VO1NA, but reports that:

“As far as propagation from Canada to the Netherlands goes, I have not seen it this summer as poor as the last couple of nights. Last night I could only hear NDB QY-263, Sydney, Nova Scotia and nothing else. Normally I can hear 10 NDB’s or more form your part of the world.”

John, WA3ETD / WG2XKA, reported the worst QRN and operating conditions of the Summer during this session but that didn’t stop a few newer stations that reported John’s signal for the first time, including N3FL and NF4E.  John provided reports for four WSPR stations and he received reports from ten unique stations.

Neil, W0YSE/7 / WG2XSV, reported band conditions like the last few nights as the Summer doldrums roll on:

“Conditions were about the same as last session. My 2w ERP WSPR was heard by 15 stations including Merv/XCR 21 times (best of -10), and Laurence/XPQ only 2 times (at -25, -27). No spotters east of a line between Alberta and Utah.

Heard these 5 wspr beacons: XCR 18X (best -19, XPQ 1x (-25), XXM 73x (best -12), VE7VV 32x (best -15), and XGP over 100x in 24 hrs (best +11 😉

I might be absent from 630m for a night or two to test my 44.5′ vertical on 160 and/or 80m under summer conditions.”

Ken, K5DNL / WG2XXM, reported heavy QRN in Oklahoma.  He provided reports for one WSPR station and he received reports from 34 unique stations including VK2XGJ, ZL2BCG, ZL2AFP, WH2XCR, ZF1EJ and five Canadian stations.

Larry, W7IUV / WH2XGP, provided reports for five WSPR stations and he received reports from 21 unique stations including ZL2AFP, ZL2BCG, and E51WL.  As W7IUV, Larry provided reports for seven WSPR stations including ZL2BCG.

“J”, ZL2BCG, provided reports for five WSPR stations including WH2XGP and WG2XXM and he received reports from thirteen unique stations including N6GN, VE6XH, and W7IUV.

I spent the entire evening portion of the session working to get CW Skimmer and Reverse Beacon Network posting my CW signals.  There were significant developments yesterday.  In the previous session I was limited by the lack of a 2.5mm cable so that I could take I/Q from the receiver into the sound card of the PC.  It was going to take a few days to get the necessary cable until I checked Amazon.com and found that I could get the cable I needed the same day since I was an Amazon Prime member.  The shipping was less than what I would have paid had I ordered the cable from Elecraft directly and quality seems good.  I’m not an SDR person and really prefer radio without a lot of high tech involvement so naturally I ran into a few problem with the transition from the 3 kHz bandwidth settings from the previous session.  Indications from meager details online suggests that I need to use the Softrock-IF option in CW skimmer with my Elecraft KX3.  I’ve set the LO to around 470 kHz, outside of the band of interest and seem to range about 24 kHz of bandspan.  I’m using the line input on a stock SoundMax sound card in an old Dell tower that is running Windows XP.  I don’t have much control of the parameters, like sampling rate and based on a few searches on line, the card looks to be capable of 48 kHz sampling, which is also what I have selected in CW Skimmer.  I get sporadic reports of my calls as shown during the previous session and I had to massage the base offset frequency that I use to compensate for my receive converter to get my reported frequency correct when uploaded.  That seems to be OK.  The sporadic nature of my reports is bothersome, however.  I know I am overloading my system even with receiver protection in place but I find the same sporadic nature to my decodes when transmitting at low power into a dummy load.  The only thing I can figure is that something is not right about the sampling rate between the card and software.  With my limited view of the sound card parameters, I’m flying blind. What are your thoughts?  Sampling rate seems to be the most common problem with this stuff. [UPDATE – I ordered a same day delivery USB sound device that supports up to 192 kHz  from Amazon this morning so I should be able to determine if sampling rate is the issue in a few hours.]
