This session was a bit of a wash out as a major portion of North America was covered by strong storms  The eastern portions of North America experienced very limited activity and what activity was observed was largely on North / South paths except for a single transcontinental opening between New England and WH2XGP in Washington state.  The West coast looked a bit more optimistic but trans-Pacific paths continue to appear very compromised.  Bad weather is expected for the central US for several more nights but since the weather isn’t conforming to models it is any one’s guess what any forecast means.

Geomagnetic conditions are at elevated-quiet levels and the Bz is now pointing relatively strongly to the South.  Solar wind velocities are quite variable but peaked near 490 km/s.  DST values are variable and remaining near the center line.  Solarham reports that while the first coronal hole was a bust, a larger, more active region is moving into position and elevated solar wind is expected so we may see G1 and G2 storm conditions after all.




Joe, DF2JP, reported a new DL station on the air.  He provided these comments:

“Last Sunday we have trimmed the long-wire at Ruediger, DL4EAI on MF.The antenna capacity is 275pF, a small loading coil (325μH) + variometer made the job:”

A first test brought decodes of my RX with -10dB, TX is a U3S with 200mW.

In autumn the vertical part comes higher and a small PA is already in the planning

The consensus for this session was that it was a very poor night, so much so that some active stations actually received no reports.  I don’t know whether noise was the only limiting factor or if the active coronal hole has upset propagation.

There were no trans-Atlantic reports.

Joe, NU6O / WI2XBQ, reported at 0550z that out of twelve stations reporting his signal, only two of those were further than 1000 km.  Joe is located in Northern California where band conditions were arguably somewhat better than what was observed to the East.

Neil, W0YSE/7 / WG2XSV, reported that this session “looks about the same as last session here in Vancouver, WA. Heard by 15, all North and South along the western states, including AK and HI, and I heard only 3, all in WA and BC. Seems like were in the summer doldrums up here with summer weather hitting us early now.”

Larry, W7IUV / WH2XGP, provided reports for three WSPR stations and he received reports from eighteen unique stations including a transcontinental opening to N2BJW.  As W7IUV, Larry provided reports to five WSPR stations.

Ernie, KC4SIT / WI2XQU, reported that he decoded two WSPR stations with a noise level between S7 and S9 and he was reported by ten unique stations.  He provided the following statistics:

Al, WD4AHB, reported, “…Only two (2) unique spots with WI2XQU and ZF1EJ. I started receiving Ernie (WI2XQU) pretty early, right about the time I started monitoring at 0102 UTC. Eden’s (ZF1EJ) signal appeared at 0210 UTC and both were consistent through the session. My last spot with Ernie was at 0940 UTC and with Eden at 0900 UTC.”

Mike, WA3TTS, reported, “I only had 4 decodes by 0400 last night so I packed it in, the QRN was constant S9+ any direction….”

There were no trans-Pacific reports between Oceania and North America or Asia (excluding KL7 and KH6).

Roger, VK4YB, reported “Most of the QRN was from a system in the central Coral Sea. I just managed to decode a couple of VK’s through it…VK2XGJ was able to do better, pulling in WH2XCR.”  Roger received a single report from WE2XPQ in Alaska.

Eden, ZF1EJ, received reports from two unique stations, both of which were due North of Cayman.  Eden had no reception reports.

Laurence, KL7L / WE2XPQ, provided a report for VK4YB as the only trans-Pacific report for the session and Laurence shared two-way reports with WH2XCR.  Reports were also exchanged with a cluster of stations along the West coast of the US into British Columbia.  DX report details can be viewed here.

WE2XPQ 24-hour WSPR activity


Merv, K9FD/KH6 / WH2XCR, managed to hear VK1DSH, VK4YB and VK5FQ while receiving reports from VK2XGJ.  Merv also shared two-way reports with WE2XPQ.  Coverage in North America was generally limited to the western portions of the continent.   It was a tough night but its good to see that activity continues in spite of poor conditions and bad weather.  DX report details can be viewed here.
