It turned out to be a noisy night in North America but propagation was quite good nevertheless. This would not have been a fun session for CW but JT9 and WSPR provided some insight into just how serviceable the band was under the high noise conditions. Fortunately morning brought quieter conditions for a number of stations in North America. Gaps in QRN in Oceania allowed a few reports in addition to reasonable openings back to North America.
Geomagnetic conditions were at quiet to elevated-quiet levels after a session that reached unsettled and storm levels. The Bz is currently pointing to the North and solar wind velocities have moderated, returning to levels below 500 km/s and averaging near 480 km/s. DST values remain active at levels below the centerline in negative territory but the values are less extreme than observed in previous sessions where storms conditions were prominent.
Trans-Atlantic openings were numerous once again with more very successful reports from EA8/LA3JJ for a number of stations in North America. There were no reports of Europeans in North America during this session but many of the stations that typically provide these trans-Atlantic reports indicate that QRN was very high. Ken, K5DNL / WG2XXM, reported that he decoded seven WSPR stations and was decoded by 63 unique stations including WE2XPQ, F1AFJ, and EA8/LA3JJ. He also received a session best +3 dB S/N report from WH2XCR at a distance of 6007 km.
Paul, N1BUG, reported high QRN during the evening that moderated some by morning. He decoded eleven WSPR stations including WH2XGP in Washington state.
Rick, W7RNB / WI2XJQ, reported that many of his reports came from the Midwest which was mired in storm noise during the evening and overnight. Rick provided reports to eight WSPR stations and was decoded by 28 unique stations including ZF1EJ. Rick’s unique report detail can be viewed here.

Roger, VK4YB, reported at 0858z, that “Storms are much closer tonight. Little chance to hear anyone, but I will TX.” By 1517z Roger indicated that, “The storms haven’t moved much but there are some gaps in the QRN allowing a few RX spots. 160m/630m tests with VE6XH continue. Top band the clear winner tonight with 9 spots, best at -1, 630m provided 10 spots, best at -25. Most DX spots came from WE2XPQ, but good to see JA3TVF in the list again, it’s been awhile. I was about to pull down the JA beam and bin it, so just as well I didn’t have time.” Its good to hear that Roger found success with the JA antenna. I am inclined to believe that those openings are very seasonal, particularly for the angle of attack that he achieves with his end fed antenna and I think that this explains many of the differences observed with other VK stations on the path to JA. Roger received reports from CF7MM, JA3TVF, VE6XH, and W7IUV. He provided reports for WH2XXP.
Phil, VK3ELV, received reports from JA1NQI and JH3XCU.
Ward, K7PO / WH2XXP, received reports from 65 unique stations including VK4YB, VK2XGJ, ZL2AFP and the previously reported EA8/LA3JJ.
Larry, W7IUV / WH2XGP, provided reports for twelve WSPR stations and was reported by 51 unique stations including ZL2ZFP. As W7IUV, Larry provided reports for ten WSPR stations including VK4YB.
Joe, DF2JP, reported that he had favorable weather conditions to fly his kite antenna overnight and will launch at 1700z with hopes of flying until after sunrise. UPDATE: Joe reports a problem and there will be no kite antenna tonight.
Rod, VE7VV, submitted this note about his work to modify a Softrock TX/RX SDR for use at LF and MF and to generate a signal. Check the link for his writeup and modification details:
“I have modified a SoftRock RXTX SDR to work on 50 kHz to 2.5 mHz RX and TX on the 2200, 630 and 160 mtr ham bands at 1W output.This was a fun project that has allowed me to try out 630 mtrs and see the amazing capabilities of WSPR and JT9. With a poor antenna (30 ft vertical with 130 ft horizontal top load) the 1W allowed 2-way 630 mtr QSO’s with several local VE7’s, including my first 630 mtr contact, CW with Steve, VE7SL. The SDR spectral display is great to see what is happening on the low frequencies, the NDB’s for example. Eden, ZF1EJ, reports that he would be in a “receive-only” state this weekend due to the CQWW 160-meter SSB contest. He provided reports for eleven WSPR stations including WH2XCR.
Laurence, KL7L / WE2XPQ, received reports from JA1NQI and JR1IZM and shared two-way reports with VK4YB and WH2XCR. He also provided reports from WG2XXM in Oklahoma in addition to stations along the West coast. Merv, K9FD/KH6 / WH2XCR, provided the rare JA report to 7L1RLL and received reports from JA1NQI, JA3TVF, and JR1IZM on the same path. Merv also provided reports to VK3ELV and shared two-way reports with VK4YB and WE2XPQ. He also received reports from VK2XGJ and ZF1EJ. Coverage in eastern North America was limited due to high QRN but Merv was reported by K8PZ who is located very close to those evening storms. DX report details can be viewed here.
