QRN decreased significantly for most stations and geomagnetic conditions are stable and quiet but the session was average at best

I felt that this session was average at best.  There were some highlights that seem logical for the quiet geomagnetic and terrestrial conditions observed but other openings that should have developed never did.  At least the big storms creating QRN problems for so many have excited the continent.  A number of stations are reporting high winds on both coasts and beyond.  Others may be experiencing precipitation static due to Winter weather conditions.

Geomagnetic conditions are quiet with a Bz that has remained at unity for much of the session.  The solar wind velocity remains at moderate levels, averaging 411 km/s, which is down from the previous session.  I suspect the solar wind will dip into low levels over the next 24-hours.  DST levels are relatively stable and the Kyoto DST report from the previous session has been retracted so evidently the extreme decrease that was observed was reported in error.

 

 

 

Trans-Atlantic openings were very lean for this session after a very strong run over the past week.  Report details for these stations can be viewed here.

WD2XSH/17 –> PA0O

EA5DOM –> WH2XZO

Doug, K4LY / WH2XZO, had the sole trans-Atlantic reception report of a European station during this session.  Doug offered the following comments about the session:

“When the high winds calmed, and I saw the dangling wire above the loading coil, and I re-soldered it before dark and was able to transmit.

The night’s interesting result, however, was with reception.  I started monitoring with the northeast favoring, amplified K6SE  Delta.  Voila!    A decode of EA5DOM.  By morning, it appeared to be the only decode of Europe all night from North America.  Was that the first time an inland and a southern station had the only European decode?  It definitely was the first time for WH2XZO.  The reason is quite probably because of the snowstorm QRN in the northeast or was it actually conditions?  The 13 unique decodes and 43 “decoded bys” was nothing special.”

Al, K2BLA / WI2XBV, reported that it was a “Fair WSPR session last nite and agn this AM.”  Al was decoded by 26 unique stations, including one decode from WH2XCR  and he decoded nine WSPR stations including fifteen reports of WH2XCR.

Paul, N1BUG,  reported that he decoded eleven WSPR stations but had no DX or transcontinental reports.

Mike, WA3TTS, reported four decodes of WH2XCR and offered some details on his filter configuration and receive setup for the session:

“Perhaps I would have had a few more XCR spots last night if I ran my usual 500 kHz LPF, but I decided to throw an FZ-01 473 kHz Telefunken mechanical filter together for a quick test overnight on 630m WSPR2..  I had a pair of BN73-202 10:1 transformers already wound up and tested at 1/2dB insertion loss each at 630m, so I used them even though they were less than optimal at 630m.  I put the filter in a tin plate enclosure folded up with a metal brake, so the filter circuitry was well shielded.  Initial insertion loss was about 7 dB when tuned and tested at -6 dBm level. I was able to retune it at -40 and -50 dB test signal levels and it showed about 6 dB insertion loss and about 13dB return loss.
Telefunken spec’s the FZ-01, 02, 03 mechanical filters at 2dB insertion loss, so I have a way to go yet (3dB) before I see those kinds of numbers.  It did seem to have lowest insertion loss around 465 kHz in the initial testing and those numbers were 3 dB better than what I saw at 475 kHz, so there may be room for improvement.

The data sheet for the FZ-01 does state that the applied signal level does effect the tuning of the required 300pf +/- 20% capacitors needed on the high-Z side of the filter.  Image attachment shows the filter and the DL3ARM construction notes available online.

I switched the filter out this morning and replaced the 500 kHz LPF. I was curious if the background noise level relative to 630m signals would increase at 630m with the 500 kHz LPF, but that did not appear to be the case.  So apparently I have enough LPF filtering from AM BC in the 630m band. That is an interesting result, because my 300 kHz LPF definitely improves 137 and 185 kHz reception in daylight when all the local AM BC stations are in their higher power daylight mode…

The added insertion loss of the FZ-01 was a bit of a mixer blessing with the stronger WSPR station signal levels attenuated 5~6 dB from their normal levels (+11 > +18 SNRs), but also fewer false decodes from blocking dynamic range limitations in the WSPR2 630m window…

Still, there is a chance with additional testing a different transformer combination and capacitor tuning will offer lower insertion loss while having the desirable +/- 18 kHz band width….”

Mike submitted this additional observation after making another filter change:

” I just swapped the FZ-01 filter back in line vs my 500 kHz LPF with no WSPR2 signals present. The receive level on the WSJT-X program only changed 1 dB with no WSPR signals present. So there is a difference between testing the filter at a single frequency vs the WSPR2 2500 Hz standard USB filter bandwidth and whatever audio compression/limiting is being used in the WSPR software….even so I can’t really see any definite visual improvement on the waterfall background noise, although a 1dB change is only 18 percent…”

John, VK2XGJ, noted early reports of WH2XXP and WG2XXM:

Roger, VK4YB, reported that “There were a few early spots of WH2XXP before the QRN set in. Generally poor propagation with only VE6XH able to decode in NA. JA path was fair.  Waiting for better conditions to continue antenna tests.”  Roger received reports from JA1NQI, JA1PKG, JA3TVF, JE1JDL, JH1INM, JR1IZM, and VE6XH.

Kiyo, JR1IZM, reported that he decoded VK4YB’s WSPR at -31 dB S/N at 1228z while Roger was listening on the JA antenna.  Unfortunately band conditions never improved and there was no JT9 QSO attempt today.

Ken, K5DNL / WG2XXM, reported that he decoded six WSPR stations and was decoded by sixty unique stations including VK2XGJ.  Ken also reported a number of daytime reports from late morning to early afternoon from VE6JY, VE6XH and WA3TTS.

Ward, K7PO / WH2XXP, received reports from 61 unique stations including VK4YB and VK2XGJ.

It was nice to have very quiet band conditions again.  The band seemed like it was good during the early evening and my reception numbers are approaching high’s again.  I continue to let WSPR run without any QSO attempts on CW and JT9 during the evening but hope that my schedule calms down a bit in the coming weeks.  My WSPR transmission report details can be viewed here and my WSPR reception report detail can be viewed here.  Op Note:  My 472 grabber is experiencing some difficulties related to dropbox.  Its reporting may be intermittent until I can apply an update to the dropbox software this weekend.

I received a nice QSL card from Dick, W7KAM, for last weekend’s special event.  Dick – Thanks so much and my QSL to you, Dick,  was put in the mail this morning.

Laurence, KL7L / WE2XPQ, experienced a nice night with reports from JA, including 7L1RLL4, JA1NQI, JA8SCD, and JR1IZM as well as WH2XCR.  I suspect that Laurence was also active as KL7L on receive but no reports have been uploaded from overnight.  Laurence reported a connectivity problem during the evening so he may upload reception reports later, which will be appended here.  DX report details can be viewed here.

WE2XPQ 24-hour WSPR activity

 

Merv, K9FD/KH6 / WH2XCR, also had a nice session, receiving VK3HP and two-way reports with VK4YB.  Merv also received reports from JA1NQI, JR1IZM, ZL2BCG, and VK2XGJ.  Coverage of North America was solid, with two-way reports for WI2XBV and WH2XZO and four reception reports from WA3TTS.  DX report details for this session can be viewed here.
